Surface Finishes - FAQs
How do I choose the right surface finish for my part?
Selection depends on the part’s base material, functional requirements, and appearance goals. For example, anodizing works best for aluminum to improve corrosion resistance, while powder coating is better for durable colored finishes on metals and plastics.
Which finishes are available for plastics?
Painting, powder coating, and certain textured finishes (e.g., SPI & MT) are compatible with plastics. Most plating and anodizing processes are for metals only.
Are all finishes suitable for functional prototypes?
Not necessarily. For prototypes where lead time is critical, simpler finishes like as-machined or sand blasting are faster. Coatings requiring curing, plating baths, or multi-step masking may extend turnaround time.
Can I apply multiple finishes on the same part?
Yes, in many cases. For example, a machined aluminum part can be anodized and then laser-engraved, or plated and then painted. The sequence must be planned during production to avoid damage to prior finishes.
Do surface finishes affect dimensional accuracy?
Yes. Coatings like powder coating or plating add thickness (typically 10–50 μm) which can impact tight tolerances. Machining allowances may be required before finishing.
Are the finishes compliant with RoHS or REACH standards?
Most of our standard finishes can be provided in RoHS/REACH-compliant versions. If you need certifications such as FDA, NSF, or biocompatibility, inform our engineers during quoting.
How durable are the finishes for outdoor use?
Finishes like anodizing, powder coating, and certain electroless nickel coatings offer strong resistance to UV, moisture, and corrosion, making them suitable for outdoor or marine applications. Paint without proper sealing may degrade faster outdoors.
Can you color match finishes to a specific requirement?
Yes. We can match colors using RAL or Pantone standards for painting, powder coating, and anodizing (within achievable limits). Custom colors may require additional lead time.
How do I maintain parts with surface finishes?
Use mild detergents and avoid abrasive cleaning tools. For anodized or coated parts, avoid acidic or alkaline cleaners that could damage the finish.
What’s the typical lead time for finishing?
Basic finishes like sand blasting or as-machined can be done within 1–2 days. Coatings like anodizing, plating, or powder coating may require 3–7 days depending on batch size and complexity.
