What is Wire EDM?

A non-contact process for precision cutting of conductive materials

Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) uses a thin, electrically charged wire to cut through metal by creating controlled sparks. Unlike conventional machining, there’s no cutting force — making it perfect for fragile, hard, or intricate parts. The process is done underwater to flush away debris and maintain accuracy, and it can achieve ultra-tight tolerances and fine surface finishes.

Typical use cases:

  • Internal cutouts or narrow slots in hardened steels
  • Complex tooling and mold inserts
  • Sharp corners and micro-features in precision components
  • Parts that require minimal thermal distortion
  • Stress-Free Cutting
  • Micro-Precision

Stress-Free Cutting

Stress-Free for Complex Parts

Stress-Free Cutting

Wire EDM uses electrical discharge instead of physical force. That means no tool pressure, no part deformation, and no mechanical stress. It’s ideal for delicate geometries, thin walls, and hardened materials where conventional machining might distort the part.

Micro-Level Precision Machining

With tolerances down to ±0.002 mm, Wire EDM excels at creating sharp internal corners, micro-holes, and ultra-fine features. It’s the go-to choice for components requiring tight tolerances and precise edge definitions—often used in aerospace, medical, and tooling sectors.

Wire EDM Machining FAQs

What is Wire EDM and how does it work?

Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) uses a thin electrically charged wire to cut through conductive materials without direct contact. The wire generates sparks that erode the material with high precision, ideal for hard metals and intricate shapes.

What materials are compatible with Wire EDM?

We typically machine stainless steel, tool steel, aluminum, copper, brass, titanium, and tungsten carbide. All materials must be electrically conductive.

What kind of tolerances can be achieved with Wire EDM?

Wire EDM is known for its tight tolerances. At EZRA, we can reach ±0.005mm depending on the part geometry and material hardness.

Are there any limitations in part geometry or size?

Wire EDM excels in cutting complex contours and internal features. However, the process requires a start hole or edge access and is best suited for parts under 400 mm in height. Thin features may require support or post-process stabilization.

Does Wire EDM leave burrs or require post-processing?

Wire EDM produces virtually burr-free cuts. For critical applications, light polishing or surface finishing may still be applied. Edge quality can vary slightly based on material and cut speed.

How long does Wire EDM take compared to CNC?

Wire EDM is slower than CNC milling but offers unmatched precision for specific features. It’s typically used for detailed cuts, mold inserts, or hard materials that are difficult to mill.

Can EZRA handle batch production with EDM?

Yes, we support both prototyping and small-batch production. Each job is reviewed by our engineering team to determine the most efficient fixturing and cut strategy.

What surface finishes are possible with Wire EDM?

The typical surface finish ranges from Ra 0.2 to 1.0 µm. If required, we also offer post-process polishing or bead blasting.

Is Wire EDM suitable for aerospace or medical parts?

Absolutely. Due to its precision and ability to machine hard-to-cut materials, Wire EDM is widely used for aerospace turbine components, surgical tools, and mold tooling.

What files or drawings should I provide for Wire EDM?

Please submit a 2D drawing with clear cut paths or a 3D CAD model (.STEP or .IGES) along with the material type, thickness, and tolerance requirements. If unsure, our engineers can help translate your needs into manufacturable features.
