What Is Stereolithography (SLA)?

Stereolithography (SLA) is a resin-based 3D printing technology that uses a UV laser to selectively cure liquid photopolymer layer by layer. This process achieves extremely high resolution (up to ±0.05 mm), smooth surface finishes, and the ability to reproduce fine details and complex geometries that other additive processes may struggle with.

Because of its precision and surface quality, SLA is widely used for visual prototypes, fit and assembly validation, master patterns for molding, and functional parts requiring tight tolerances. It is also an efficient solution for producing small-batch parts where tooling would be too costly or time-consuming.

Not sure if SLA is the right choice compared to SLS, MJF, or CNC machining? Our team offers instant online support to help you select the most cost-effective process for your project.

Available SLA 3D Printing Materials

SLA 3D Printing FAQs

What types of parts are best suited for SLA printing?

SLA is ideal for visual prototypes, cosmetic models, and tight-tolerance fit checks. It’s commonly used for enclosures, assemblies, and translucent parts where surface smoothness and detail are critical.

Can SLA printed parts be used for functional testing?

SLA parts are primarily used for form and fit testing, not for structural or high-load applications. Some tough-grade resins offer limited functional performance, but they’re not as durable as nylon or metal prints.

What’s the maximum part size for SLA printing at EZRA?

Our SLA machines support parts up to 1400 × 800 × 800 mm. For larger designs, we can discuss segmented builds and bonding strategies.

What post-processing options are available?

We offer sanding, polishing, spray painting, and transparent finishing for SLA parts. You can also choose between fully transparent or semi-transparent effects, depending on material and geometry.

How long does SLA printing take?

Typical turnaround time is 3–5 working days depending on part complexity, quantity, and finishing requirements. Need it faster? Reach out and we’ll see what’s possible.

Can I request custom colors or textures?

Yes. We support custom spray paints, Pantone-matched coatings, and even soft-touch finishes for special presentation needs. Let us know what visual effect you’re aiming for.

What file formats do you accept for SLA printing?

We accept STEP (.stp/.step), STL, and IGES files. For best results, ensure your model is watertight and oriented for the intended cosmetic side.

Do you provide DFM feedback for SLA parts?

Yes. Every uploaded file is reviewed by our engineers. If your design has thin walls, unsupported features, or post-process constraints, we’ll let you know before printing.
