What Is CNC Turning?
CNC turning is a subtractive manufacturing process where a cutting tool removes material from a rotating workpiece to create precise cylindrical or conical shapes. It’s commonly used to produce shafts, bushings, pins, and custom threaded components with tight tolerances.
At EZRA, we operate multi-axis CNC lathes and mill-turn centers that can handle both rapid prototyping and production volumes. Whether it’s aluminum, stainless steel, or high-performance plastics, we ensure dimensional consistency and surface finish across batches.

CNC Turning Surface Finishes
Each surface finish delivers specific mechanical or cosmetic benefits. Depending on your part’s application, we help you select the right finishing solution.
As Machined
Fastest and most cost-efficient finish. Tool marks are visible but don’t affect function or dimensional accuracy. Common for internal parts or mechanical components where appearance is seconds.
Anodizing (Type II/III)
Improves corrosion resistance and wear hardness; adds a clean matte look. Ideal for aluminum parts in electronics or consumer goods. Not suitable for ferrous metals.
Polishing
Produces a glossy, mirror-like surface. Great for cosmetic parts or display components. Increases surface reflectivity but may reduce scratch resistance.
Sand Blasting
Creates an even matte finish by removing tool marks and reducing glare. Suitable for enclosures, brackets, and parts needing uniform appearance.
Tumbling
Smooths edges and removes sharp burrs for small metal or plastic parts. Suitable for bulk finishing with soft, matte texture.
Electropolish
Enhances corrosion resistance and removes microscopic burrs, especially for stainless steel parts used in medical or food equipment.
Chromate Conversion (Alodine)
Thin protective layer for aluminum parts that need to stay conductive or be painted later. Often used in aerospace and electronics.
Heat Treatment
Alters the metal’s microstructure to increase strength, hardness, or ductility. Common before or after CNC for steel shafts or gears.
Brushed Finish
Adds a directional slash texture that hides minor imperfections. Often used for metal panels and visible faces.
Powder Coating
Tough, colored finish with strong adhesion and wear resistance. Works well on steel or aluminum parts for consumer products. Not suitable for high-tolerance areas.
Electroplating
Adds a thin metal coating (nickel, zinc, chrome) for appearance or electrical conductivity. Often used on copper or steel.
Black Oxidize
Chemical blackening for ferrous metals, reducing reflectivity and adding light corrosion protection. Common in tooling or mechanical linkages.

CNC Turning Services FAQs
What types of parts can CNC turning produce?
CNC turning is ideal for producing cylindrical or symmetrical components, such as shafts, pins, bushings, and threaded parts. It’s widely used in industries like automotive, aerospace, and medical due to its high efficiency and precision for round geometries.
Do you offer plastic CNC turning services?
Yes, we support CNC turning for both metals and plastics. Our team understands the specific cutting behaviors of different plastic materials and adjusts parameters accordingly to ensure dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
What’s the main difference between CNC milling and turning?
CNC milling involves rotating cutting tools to remove material from a stationary workpiece, making it ideal for flat or complex 3D shapes. CNC turning rotates the workpiece itself against a fixed tool, making it best suited for parts with rotational symmetry. Both processes are complementary depending on the geometry of your design.
Can you work with complex geometries or 2D drawings?
Absolutely. We accept 2D drawings as well as 3D CAD files and have extensive experience machining parts with tight tolerances and complex features. Our engineering team can assist in reviewing manufacturability if needed.
How do you ensure the security of our designs and intellectual property?
We take confidentiality seriously. All files and data are handled securely through encrypted systems. If required, we’re happy to sign NDAs or follow your company’s specific data protection protocols.
Can you help optimize my design for CNC manufacturing?
Yes. Our engineers provide DFM (Design for Manufacturability) feedback to improve cost-efficiency, reduce lead times, and enhance part performance. We’ll help you refine features like wall thickness, undercuts, or tool access points to ensure smooth production.
What certifications or quality standards do you follow?
We operate under strict quality control processes aligned with ISO standards. Every part is inspected with calibrated equipment, and we offer material certifications, inspection reports, and CMM data upon request.
