Ezra Made helped an American wellness brand improve sales by a record-breaking 60% with premium custom packaging. After several months of delays, high costs, and compliance issues, a leading pre-roll brand turned to Ezra Made for custom packaging. We delivered robust, child-safe, and eco-friendly packaging that catapulted their growth.

Project Background
Our client, a Los Angeles-based cannabis brand, treats every pre-roll with artistic craftsmanship. They care about the customer and use only premium-grade indoor flowers infused with rich extracts. But a good product alone doesn’t tell the whole life-transformation brand story.
They needed packaging that could protect the integrity of the product, keeping it fresh and aromatic for longer. It needed to be child-safe, robust, luxurious, and eco-friendly.
We stepped in and leveraged cutting-edge injection molding capabilities to help them achieve these complex packaging goals.
Project Requirements
The client wanted a pre-roll tube that would protect their product and comply with U.S. safety standards. It needed to look good on the shelf and communicate the brand signature. But behind that simple brief was a series of past frustrations that affected their business.

1. Meet safety and regulatory standards
Child-resistant features were a mandatory requirement. Many suppliers had failed to deliver child-resistant (CR) packaging on time. Longer lead times, ranging from six to eight weeks, halted product launches. The client had missed many retail windows as a result. Regulatory compliance had become a chokehold.
2. Make packaging eco-friendly and affordable
A big percentage of our client’s customers were deeply environmentally conscious. As you would expect, sustainability was part of their core brand promise. Along with ensuring that packaging materials were good for the environment, the client wanted to keep costs low.
3. Ensure packaging is beautiful and durable
The client wanted robust packaging to comprehensively protect the product during transit and in customers’ homes. It was imperative to use moisture-resistant and impact-resistant materials. The finishing needed to be premium and in alignment with the overall brand image.
Production Challenges
Every great product design looks good on paper. But on the factory floor, the rubber meets the road. Balancing the laws of physics with tough business demands requires out-of-the-box thinking. Keeping regulators and customers happy is similarly tough. This project was no exception.

1. Adding an intuitive locking mechanism
Child-resistant packaging often has to meet ASTM/CPSC requirements. That requires micron-level precision and the use of repeatable locking mechanisms. The mind-bending task was how to make the tubes easy to open for adults and hard to open for curious kids. Any geometrical misalignment would be disastrous. We needed to:
- Design interlocking parts that don’t wear easily.
- Design angles and undercuts that improve ejector reliability and child resistance.
- Analyze mold flow data to optimize cooling and cap symmetry to prevent jamming.
2. Optimizing the structural integrity of parts
Eco-friendly packaging is good for branding. But on the factory floor, this dream can end in cracked parts that lead to delays and high costs. We needed to maintain optimal wall thickness and temperature control for structural and visual perfection. We also needed to keep costs low without raising minimum order quantities. Our plan included:
- Running low-volume runs for material testing without reducing tool life.
- Reducing cycle times and internal stress through proper placement of cooling channels.
- Developing biodegradable hybrid resins for strength and color consistency.
3. Guaranteeing smooth UX and strong brand identity
Great brands thrive because of innovative designs. For our client, that meant a robust and beautiful, tight-sealing tube. The engineering difficulties involved in transforming this vision into an injection-molded part were not insignificant. We needed to:
- Keep tolerance bands under 0.05mm for a smooth cap fit.
- Mitigate the risk of air traps with venting channels.
- Retain brand color and texture with multi-cavity tooling.
| Challenge | Description | Impact |
| Child-Resistant Locking Mechanism | Designing CR-compliant locking tabs with tight tolerances. | Balancing compliance with usability without delay |
| Eco-Resin Processing | Implementing careful pressure and temperature control for hybrid resins to protect part quality and cycle time. | Preventing material wastage while maintaining part consistency. |
| Dimensional Stability | Working with complex geometry designs and precise control to prevent warping | Ensuring perfect fit, impact resistance, and seal integrity. |
| Multi-Cavity Uniformity | Increasing output without risking texture and color consistency | Visual consistency and dimensional consistency across batches |
| Cycle Time Optimization | Achieving faster cycles without the risk of incomplete fills and surface blemishes | Meeting client lead time expectations |

Our Approaches
Ezra Made provided end-to-end injection molding support. The first step was the Design for Manufacturability review. Then we ran production simulations, tested with a small batch, and later scaled production.

Cannabis packaging design
- We comprehensively went over the designs and technical details to determine the best production pathways.
- We studied and refined every 3D Model until the design made sense on the factory floor.
- We optimized wall thickness and simulated flows for defect-free results.
Material selection
We chose post-consumer recycled plastic for tubes. This is a robust yet light and durable material good for protecting contents from moisture and breaking. We ensured that all cannabis packaging materials met FDA food-safety and child safety standards.
Flow simulations
After DFM review, we ran flow simulations to visualize the injection molding process. We used computer models to predict how the material would move inside the mold. We made forecasts of when and where air could get trapped and where warpage could occur.
Prototyping
We CNC-machined textured surfaces and validated CR lock mechanisms. We started with a 500-unit batch and sent the cannabis packaging prototypes to our client within 3 days. They were able to physically inspect the packaging and test functionality, giving us further feedback.
Production
Once the prototypes passed all tests, we moved to full production. We melted PCR resins and injected them at high pressures into precision multi-cavity molds to form the tubes and tight sealing caps. Once filled, we cooled the mold with water channels for hardening and shaping. After the ejection of the pieces, we inspected and trimmed them for dimensional accuracy and fit integrity.
Finishing and assembly
We added a locking cap, a magnetic seal, and the inner liner that keeps the product fresh. We added rigid ribs for better impact resistance to keep the product safe. Every part passed through multi-step quality assurance processes to optimize fit, shine, and safety.
We completed the entire process, from DFM review to prototyping and production, in just 3 weeks.
How The Client Benefited from Working with Us

Shorter lead times
The new cannabis packaging tubes were a game-changer for the client. Previously, they had been forced to wait two months for delivery, but we did it in just 3 weeks. This speed helped their product lines move faster at the pace of demand.
Lower costs
Their costs dropped sharply. As an industry-leading injection molding company, MOQs are not part of how we operate. This was advantageous for the client because they could test several cannabis packaging designs. They could order as few units as they needed without paying high fees.
Better compliance
Quality and compliance became a strength for their brand. We passed their cannabis packaging through rigorous inspection processes for better child safety and robustness. Through the use of recycled plastics, we helped them earn the “Eco-Packaged” certification, a mark that echoed their customers’ values.
The Results
We delivered the finished packaging 75% faster than our competitors. When the client finally launched the new packaging, their products sold 60% faster than before. Their customer loyalty went up thanks to eco-conscious packaging.
Customers reported improved usability and lauded the robust child protection mechanism. The product now stayed fresh for longer, retaining its original aroma and flavor without the risk of moisture sipping in. Our tubes put the client on a path to steady business growth and unprecedented success.
